Dhaka, Oct 5 — Detectives of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) have arrested eight leaders and activists of the Awami League from various parts of the capital over the past 24 hours, officials said on Sunday.

Those arrested include Enamul Kabir Emon (51), member of the party’s central committee; Emdadul Haque, office secretary of Dhaka South Metropolitan Awami League; Mosharraf Hossain (38), vice-president of Banani Thana Tanti League; Kazi Miraz Hossain Moni (30), joint general secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan South unit of the BCL; Belal Ahmed Nahian alias Biplab (32); Shahanur Alam Sabu (53), president of Joypurhat Amdai Union Awami League; Nure Alam Liton (37), organising secretary of Motijheel Thana Jubo League; and Aminul Haque Murad (45), vice-president of Chawkbazar unit Awami League, according to United News of Bangladesh.

Deputy Commissioner (Media) Talebur Rehman said the arrests were made during coordinated operations across Dhanmondi, Bhashantek, Moghbazar, Wari, Jatrabari, Tejgaon, and Gulshan. Enamul Kabir Emon was reportedly detained in Dhanmondi around 1:05 a.m. on Sunday following a tip-off.

The arrests come amid an intensified crackdown on Awami League leaders and supporters under the Muhammad Yunus-led interim government.

Meanwhile, Chief Prosecutor Mohammad Tajul Islam announced that the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) will soon begin a primary investigation into allegations that the Awami League was involved in crimes against humanity, as reported by The Daily Star.

He said the tribunal had received a complaint from the Nationalist Democratic Movement, accusing the Awami League of operating as a “criminal organisation.”

The development follows a series of arrests since September, when over 240 Awami League leaders and activists were detained after a flash procession in Dhaka. The party has strongly condemned the crackdown, calling the Yunus-led regime “illegal and repressive.”
