A defamation suit was filed on Monday against Tripura Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury over his alleged remarks targeting Fisheries and SC Welfare Minister Sudhangshu Das and his family. The complaint was filed on behalf of the minister by West Tripura Public Prosecutor Biswajit Deb before the Sessions Court of West Tripura district.
According to the prosecution, Chaudhury made the alleged defamatory statements during a media interaction in October last year. Advocate Raju Datta has been engaged to represent the complainant in the case. The prosecution claims that the statements were “false and fabricated” and were widely circulated through various media platforms, thereby damaging the reputation of the minister and his family.
Speaking to reporters, advocate Datta said that Chaudhury had accused the minister’s brother, Himangshu Das, of amassing disproportionate assets by allegedly misusing Sudhangshu Das’s political position. He further alleged that the family’s wealth increased significantly after the minister assumed office and claimed that his brother became the highest taxpayer in the state.
Datta asserted that the allegations were baseless and lacked factual support. He added that the complaint was filed after obtaining mandatory sanction from the Governor. Earlier, Minister Sudhangshu Das had strongly denied the allegations, demanded a public apology, and warned of legal action.
