CPIM Holds Rally in Shakuntala Road Opposing ‘Undemocratic’ Voter List Deletions

Agartala, Aug 8 — The Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPIM] on Thursday organised a public rally in the Shakuntala Road area, raising strong objections to what it described as an “undemocratic process” of removing legitimate voters’ names through the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll.

The rally was held under the slogan calling for an immediate halt to the alleged arbitrary deletions. Addressing the gathering, former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar sharply criticised the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government, accusing it of manipulating the voter list to undermine the democratic process.

Sarkar alleged that the name deletions targeted specific sections of the population in an attempt to weaken opposition voices ahead of elections. “This process is aimed at depriving genuine citizens of their constitutional right to vote. It is an assault on democracy,” he said.

State CPIM secretary Jitendra Choudhury also addressed the rally, echoing similar concerns and urging people to remain vigilant. “The voter list is the foundation of free and fair elections. Tampering with it erodes public trust and damages the credibility of the electoral process,” he remarked.

Other CPIM leaders present at the rally called on the Election Commission to take immediate steps to ensure that no eligible voter is excluded during the revision process. They urged citizens to check their names in the voter list and raise objections promptly if discrepancies are found.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from party supporters and local residents, with slogans demanding transparency and accountability in the electoral system. The CPIM leaders vowed to continue their campaign until the alleged irregularities in the SIR process are stopped and corrective measures are implemented.
