Agartala, July 14 — The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee on Monday held protest rallies in Udaipur and Kumarghat, voicing strong opposition to rising power tariffs, the installation of smart meters, increasing crime, and political violence in the state.

In Udaipur, undeterred by heavy rain, Congress workers launched a rally from the District Congress office. Marching through various streets, they reached Jamtala, where a street meeting was held. Addressing the gathering, Congress leaders Titon Pal, Milan Kar, Pralhad Ghosh, and Indrajit Das strongly criticised the ruling BJP-led government.

The leaders alleged large-scale fraud in the implementation of smart meters and condemned the recent rise in violent crimes, including murder and rape. They also highlighted recent attacks on Congress MLAs Sudip Roy Barman and Gopal Chandra Roy, accusing the government of using state machinery to suppress opposition voices.

“The smart meter drive is nothing but a scam. Common consumers are being harassed in the name of modernisation,” said one of the leaders, demanding an immediate rollback of the initiative and urgent action against political violence.

Simultaneously, in Kumarghat, Congress supporters marched to the local power office, raising slogans against the Power Department and the Minister in charge. Protesters accused the government of exploiting consumers through faulty smart meters and ignoring public concerns.

The Kumarghat rally was led by Pradesh Congress Secretary Tarun Saha, former MLA Dwiba Chandra Rangkhawl, Youth Congress leader Saurav Chakraborty, and Block Congress President Asit Deb.

The dual demonstrations mark a renewed push by the Congress to galvanise public support on key issues ahead of upcoming political events, as opposition voices grow louder against what they term as authoritarian governance in Tripura.
