Agartala: Feb 17: In a press conference held at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan, Mathew Antony, the All India Congress spokesperson and media in-charge for the North East region, expressed his views on the current political landscape. His statements primarily focused on the ruling party BJP and the challenges faced by the nation.
Antony criticized the BJP for making grand promises to the citizens ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. Despite the government’s pledge to create 2 crore jobs annually, unemployment remains a pressing issue. The situation has worsened during the BJP’s tenure.
The cost of essential goods has surged, surpassing the purchasing power of ordinary citizens. Families are struggling to manage their expenses due to abnormal price increases.
Antony highlighted the impact of the Goods and Services Tax (GST), which allows the government to collect taxes. However, this system has also affected farmers adversely.
The government’s failure to ensure fair crop prices led to protests by farmers. Tragically, over seven hundred farmers lost their lives during these agitations. Despite promises, their grievances remain unaddressed.
Antony criticized the government’s claims of empowering women, pointing out that women have been disproportionately affected during its tenure. In 2022, 31,568 rape cases were registered, with 86 cases still pending.
Overall, Antony asserted that injustice and people’s problems have escalated under the current government. The rich are getting richer while the poor face greater hardships.
Antony emphasized that the Congress remains the primary party to raise a voice against these issues, offering an alternative to the ruling BJP.
As the Lok Sabha elections approach, Antony’s statements underscore the need for informed choices and robust debate on critical matters affecting the nation.
