Agartala: Feb 28: On Friday, the Gomati District Congress Party organized a protest in Udaipur following allegations of a financial scam involving HDFC Bank. The protesters, comprising Congress workers and supporters, demanded that the bank return all deposited funds to customers, along with accrued interest.
Titton Pal, president of the Gomati District Congress, highlighted that accusations of embezzlement against the bank date back to 2003. Despite these concerns, the bank authorities allegedly continued to misappropriate customers’ funds. Recent revelations indicate that approximately 82 lakh rupees were embezzled, though some reports suggest the amount could exceed 2 crore rupees.
Two individuals have been arrested in connection with the scam: Abhishek Sarkar, the bank’s Relationship Officer, and Jayanta Saha, a constable from the Radhakishorepur police station. However, questions remain as to why the bank manager, Suman Biswas, has not yet been apprehended. The Congress Party, along with the Youth Congress, has called for the immediate arrest of Suman Biswas and any others implicated in the fraudulent activities.
The protest underscored concerns over the perceived delay in action by authorities. The Congress Party has urged the police to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that all those responsible, including senior officials, are held accountable. The incident has raised broader questions about the bank’s practices and the effectiveness of mechanisms to safeguard customers’ financial interests.
