Agartala: Jan 20: Recently, the state witnessed a legislative assembly session, during which the Chief Minister and other ministers presented information that highlighted several failures of the government, according to the opposition. The state’s citizens have become increasingly alarmed by the government’s actions. On January 16, during a Police Week program, the Chief Minister made false claims regarding law and order, which shocked the public. This issue was raised by Prabir Chakraborty, the spokesperson for the Pradesh Congress, during a press conference at the Pradesh Congress office on Monday.
Chakraborty criticized the current government for its unfulfilled promise of a “drug-free Tripura.” He stated that instead of progress, Tripura is drowning in a sea of drugs. He mentioned that the information presented by the Chief Minister in the legislative assembly regarding drug abuse was minimal and insignificant. Moreover, the Chief Minister admitted that the number of people affected by AIDS in the state is rising due to drug use, especially since 2018, with a simultaneous increase in the death toll. Many of the drug users, he claimed, are students who are being infected through syringe use.
He questioned whether this was the sign of a “drug-free Tripura” as promised by the government, especially when the Chief Minister is still claiming that the government is working towards such a goal. Chakraborty also pointed out that while the Chief Minister has been talking about the number of drug dealers arrested, those who are caught are often drivers or assistants, while the real drug traffickers and dealers, who are allegedly linked to the ruling party, continue to evade capture. He accused the government of shielding the actual drug traffickers, adding that a portion of the police force itself is involved in such activities. This, he claimed, was why a police officer in North Tripura had to be suspended recently. The Congress spokesperson alleged that the government is protecting the real culprits, with the ruling party’s influence obscuring the issue.
