Dhaka, July 13 — CNG-run auto-rickshaw drivers brought parts of Dhaka to a standstill on Sunday as they staged a large-scale protest, blocking major roads in Banani. The demonstration severely disrupted traffic on the busy Uttara–Mohakhali route, prompting public safety concerns and widespread commuter frustration.

The protest began around 10 a.m. in front of the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) headquarters. Wrapped in symbolic white shrouds, drivers demanded the introduction of fixed operating routes for CNG auto-rickshaws in the capital. Many vowed to continue their demonstration until their demands are met.

According to Mehedi Hasan, Investigation Officer of Banani Police Station, CNG drivers blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh road, halting traffic in both directions. Police were deployed in force and were working to restore normal traffic flow throughout the day.

CNG drivers from areas outside Dhaka also joined the sit-in, intensifying the blockade and drawing greater attention to their cause. The demonstration led to gridlock in surrounding neighborhoods, although the elevated expressway remained operational, offering some relief for commuters traveling between Uttara, Tejgaon, and Hatirjheel.

Traffic authorities issued multiple advisories, urging residents to use alternative routes and stay informed through official updates. Law enforcement continued to monitor the protest closely, prioritizing public safety.

The protest has reignited discussions on the regulation of Dhaka’s CNG auto-rickshaw sector, which plays a vital role in the city’s public transport network. With drivers refusing to back down, city officials are under growing pressure to address longstanding concerns about route allocation and operational oversight.

The ongoing agitation raises concerns over further traffic disruptions in the coming days if a resolution is not reached swiftly.
