Agartala, May 2026: CK Birla Hospitals – BM Birla Heart Hospital, one of Eastern India’s leading cardiac care institutions, is transforming the landscape of heart surgery through advanced Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery (MICS) led by renowned cardiac surgeon Dr. Ratan Kumar Das. The cutting-edge surgical approach is bringing new hope to elderly and high-risk cardiac patients by significantly reducing surgical trauma, postoperative pain, and recovery time compared to conventional open-heart surgery.

Unlike traditional heart surgery, which requires a large incision through the breastbone, MICS is performed through small incisions between the ribs using specialised instruments and advanced surgical techniques. This modern approach minimises blood loss, lowers the risk of infection, reduces the need for blood transfusions, shortens hospital stay, and enables faster recovery with minimal scarring.

Speaking on the growing importance of minimally invasive procedures in modern cardiac treatment, Dr. Ratan Kumar Das said, “Many elderly patients or individuals with multiple co-morbidities remain fearful of heart surgery because of concerns about major procedures and prolonged recovery. Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery has revolutionised patient care by allowing us to perform highly complex surgeries with precision while ensuring less trauma and quicker rehabilitation. The greatest satisfaction comes from seeing patients recover faster and regain confidence in returning to normal life.”

In a recent landmark case, the surgical team at BM Birla Heart Hospital successfully performed a highly complex minimally invasive cardiac surgery on a 70-year-old woman suffering from multiple co-morbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, hypothyroidism, previous hip replacement surgery, breast tumour surgery, and a permanent cardiac pacemaker. The patient was critically ill with severely compromised heart function, with an ejection fraction (EF) of only 22 per cent, and was initially apprehensive about undergoing another surgery.

Despite the high surgical risk, the expert medical team successfully completed the procedure using minimally invasive techniques, ensuring reduced complications and faster postoperative recovery. The achievement highlights BM Birla Heart Hospital’s commitment to advanced cardiac innovation and patient-centric care for even the most challenging cases.
