Agartala: July 7: Residents of the Bru resettlement camps in Naisingpara, Ashapara, and Khasnampura under North Tripura’s Kanchanpur sub-division staged a protest rally on Monday, pressing the government for the fulfillment of key demands related to their rehabilitation.
Carrying placards and banners, the protesters marched through the main streets of Kanchanpur town and later gathered in front of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate’s office. Their peaceful demonstration aimed to draw attention to persistent issues affecting thousands of resettled Bru families.
A five-member delegation representing the protestors submitted a written deputation to the Deputy Collector and Magistrate (DCM), laying out a three-point charter of demands. These include:
- Immediate disbursal of income ration to all resettled Bru families in the specified camps, which many claim they have not received consistently.
- Allocation of agricultural land as promised under the rehabilitation agreement signed between the government and Bru representatives.
- Proper registration and documentation of residential plots to ensure legal ownership and protection of land rights for the resettled families.
The delegation urged the administration to act swiftly on these long-pending issues to ease the hardships faced by the Bru community, many of whom have been displaced for over two decades.
Warning of escalating their agitation if demands are not met, the protesters stated that failure by the government to act promptly could lead to stronger forms of protest, including the blockade of the national highway passing through the area.
The Bru resettlement process, initiated under a historic agreement signed in 2020, aimed to permanently rehabilitate displaced families from Mizoram in Tripura. However, delays in implementation continue to trigger unrest and uncertainty among the affected population.
