Agartala, June 24: Police have arrested two brothers in connection with the brutal murder of Samir Das, secretary of Tarun Sangha Club and a local BJP worker, in Kathaltali under Amtali Police Station in West Tripura district. The arrests have brought some relief to residents of the area, who were left shocked and angered by the violent incident.
The accused, identified as Sapan Sutradhar alias “Sappa” and Mithun Sutradhar, were taken into custody on Tuesday following an intensive police operation. Authorities suspect the murder was the result of a long-standing personal dispute and are continuing their investigation to establish the full sequence of events.
According to police sources, the incident took place around 2:30 a.m. on Tuesday when Samir Das was returning home on his scooter. Near the Shani Mandir area in Kathaltali, he was allegedly intercepted by the accused and attacked with sharp weapons. The assault left him critically injured, and he succumbed to his wounds on the spot before any medical assistance could arrive.
News of the killing triggered widespread outrage in the locality. By morning, large numbers of residents gathered in protest, demanding immediate action against those responsible. Tensions escalated when angry locals allegedly vandalized parts of the accused persons’ residences, prompting a significant security response.
Senior police officials, including West Tripura Superintendent of Police Namit Pathak, Additional SPs Dhruba Nath and Himadri Prasad Das, Amtali SDPO Parmita Pandey, and Amtali Police Station Officer-in-Charge Prantosh Das, rushed to the scene. Personnel from the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) were also deployed to maintain law and order and prevent further unrest.
Speaking to reporters, SP Namit Pathak confirmed the arrests and said that police are collecting evidence and investigating all aspects of the case.
Family members of the deceased alleged that Samir Das had been receiving threats for several months. His relatives claimed that repeated attempts had been made to harm him, describing the murder as the culmination of a long-standing feud.
Police said the situation has since been brought under control, though residents continue to demand swift justice and strict punishment for those involved.
