Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma paid an unannounced visit to the Damcherra Tribal Girls’ Hostel in North Tripura, transforming a quiet Sunday morning into a significant administrative inspection. The surprise visit underscored the state government’s focus on improving educational infrastructure and student welfare in remote tribal areas.

Addressing officials and students, Debbarma emphasized that quality education goes beyond textbooks. “To truly educate students, the first condition is improving the quality of education. And quality means more than textbooks—it requires modern infrastructure, disciplined hostel management, and nutritious food,” he stated. He stressed that a conducive learning environment is essential for concentration and long-term success, adding that infrastructure development is now a top priority.

During the inspection, authorities confirmed that two modern hostels—each with a capacity of 100 beds for boys and girls—have been sanctioned and are currently under construction. The minister reviewed facilities and interacted directly with hostel residents to assess living conditions.

In a symbolic gesture, Debbarma joined students in the dining hall, standing in line and sharing the same simple meal of rice, lentils, and vegetables. Observers described the moment as one of connection rather than authority, as the minister conversed freely with the students.

Debbarma also criticized the previous 35 years of Communist Party of India (Marxist) rule, alleging that modernization in education had failed to materialize during that period. He highlighted that hostel meal allocations, once between Rs 40 and Rs 45 per day, have now increased to Rs 100 under the current administration.

Despite political remarks, the minister concluded with a broader message: education must remain above politics and accessible to all, ensuring empowerment and awareness among tribal youth.
