Agartala, Aug 11: Tripura Legislative Assembly Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen, 72, was airlifted to Bengaluru on Monday afternoon for advanced medical treatment after undergoing emergency brain surgery in Agartala.
Mr. Sen sustained severe head injuries on Friday evening after falling in the lavatory at Agartala Railway Station, shortly before he was scheduled to travel to his home constituency in Dharmanagar, North Tripura.
He was initially admitted to Tripura Medical College and Hospital, where doctors diagnosed a brain haemorrhage and recommended immediate surgical intervention. Later that night, following his family’s request, he was shifted to a private hospital in Agartala.
According to hospital sources, surgeons successfully removed blood clots from four locations in his brain. However, his condition remains critical, and he continues to be under close medical observation.
Medical experts advised his transfer to Bengaluru to ensure specialised care during the crucial post-operative phase. The journey was made in an air ambulance equipped with advanced life-support systems.
Biswa Bandhu Sen is a veteran politician and noted theatre performer. He has been elected to the Tripura Legislative Assembly four times, representing Dharmanagar. For much of his political career, he was associated with the Congress party before joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2018 Assembly elections.
The news of his accident and critical condition has sparked concern across the political spectrum, with leaders from different parties sending wishes for his recovery.
Updates on his health are expected once doctors in Bengaluru complete a detailed assessment and outline the next course of treatment.
