Agartala, June 5: Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s two-day visit to Tripura is expected to provide a major boost to border security management along the India-Bangladesh frontier, with a comprehensive review of security arrangements and operational preparedness scheduled during his stay in the state.

Shah arrived in Agartala on Thursday evening from Shillong after attending the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC). He was received at Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport by Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, BJP Tripura President Abhishek Debroy, Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee, Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor Dipak Majumder, Chief Secretary J.K. Sinha, Director General of Police Anurag, and other senior officials.

According to officials, the Home Minister will hold a high-level meeting with senior officers of the Border Security Force (BSF), Tripura Police, and other security agencies to assess the prevailing security situation along the India-Bangladesh border. Discussions are expected to focus on infiltration, cross-border smuggling, illegal migration, trans-border crimes, and strengthening border management mechanisms.

Before the review meeting, Shah is scheduled to visit selected border locations in West Tripura district to gain firsthand insight into security arrangements and challenges faced by personnel deployed along the frontier. He is also expected to interact with BSF officers and jawans during a Sainik Sammelan.

During the visit, the Home Minister will participate in a tree plantation programme and lay foundation stones for key infrastructure projects in border areas. Officials believe that following his review, security vigilance and monitoring along the international border and adjoining human habitations will be further strengthened.

Tripura shares an 856-kilometre-long International Border with Bangladesh, making it one of the most strategically sensitive states in the Northeast. The state has long faced challenges related to illegal infiltration, smuggling, and other cross-border activities.

Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said the state is also set to benefit from the Centre’s proposed Smart Border Project, which will deploy advanced technologies such as drones, radars, and modern surveillance systems to create a robust security grid. The Home Minister’s visit is being seen as a significant step toward enhancing border security and coordination among agencies operating along the India-Bangladesh frontier.
