Agartala, Oct 27 : The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Tuesday launched a Rs 1.5-crore project to renovate and beautify a pond adjacent to Women’s College in Ward No. 22, as part of efforts to improve urban infrastructure and preserve waterbodies in the city.
The foundation stone for the project was laid at Lal Bahadur Chowmuhani in the presence of Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder, Deputy Mayor Manika Das Dutta, Ward No. 22 Councillor Himani Debbarma and other dignitaries.
According to civic officials, the project will involve the renovation of the pond and comprehensive development of the surrounding area to create an attractive and well-maintained public space. The initiative is also aimed at improving the locality’s environment and contributing to the city’s broader urban renewal efforts.
Addressing the gathering, Majumder said the municipal corporation had been working consistently over the past several years to improve civic services, address residents’ problems and make Agartala cleaner and more beautiful.
Referring to waterlogging in the city, the mayor said several areas that earlier faced severe inundation even after brief spells of rain had witnessed considerable improvement following the installation of pumping systems and the implementation of other drainage-related measures.
He said the civic body would undertake additional measures to strengthen the drainage network and address waterlogging more effectively.
Majumder also appealed to residents to cooperate with the municipal authorities in maintaining cleanliness. He urged people to use designated garbage disposal points and the AMC’s door-to-door waste collection service instead of dumping waste in open spaces, drains and waterbodies.
Improper waste disposal can block drainage channels and worsen waterlogging, particularly during the monsoon, he said.
Emphasising the importance of public participation, the mayor said sustained improvements in civic infrastructure and sanitation required the active cooperation of residents alongside the efforts of the municipal corporation.
He also highlighted the AMC’s initiatives to clean, restore and rejuvenate neglected ponds and other waterbodies across Agartala, with the aim of preserving these natural resources and making them useful community assets.
The Women’s College pond project is part of the civic body’s broader efforts to improve the city’s environmental conditions while enhancing public spaces.
Officials expressed hope that the redevelopment would improve the area’s appearance, promote environmental conservation and provide residents with a cleaner and better-organised surroundings after completion.
