Agartala: Feb 27: The recent demolition of illegally constructed roads and temporary shops by the Agartala Municipal Corporation has sparked a wave of protest among local traders. On Wednesday night, several illegally occupied shops at Lake Chaumuhani Bazar, specifically in Lake Chaumuhani Bazar, were demolished by bulldozers. This action follows earlier warnings from the Agartala Railway Corporation, which had instructed shop owners to vacate their properties, as they were built illegally on railway land. Despite these notices, the traders did not comply, prompting the municipal authorities to carry out the demolition.

The affected traders, however, are unhappy with the way the eviction was conducted. They claim that they have been conducting business in Lake Chaumuhani Bazar for several decades, even dating back to the Rajya Sabha period, without facing any eviction efforts. The sudden crackdown under the current BJP-led government has left many families in distress. The traders argue that they were given no prior notice or alternative arrangements for rehabilitation, which has led to significant financial loss for the businesses.

The traders’ concerns are centered on the lack of a rehabilitation plan, which they believe should have been put in place before such drastic measures were taken. They express frustration that the government, while enforcing regulations, has failed to provide support to those who have relied on these shops for their livelihoods for years.

While the government defends the demolition as a necessary step to clear illegal constructions, the traders view it as a harsh and unjustified move that has disrupted their lives and livelihoods without offering any recourse or compensation. This situation highlights the ongoing tension between urban development, government regulations, and the livelihood of small traders in Agartala.
