Agartala: Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) Mayor Dipak Majumder on Friday visited Durga Chowmuhani Bazaar to inspect the location identified for constructing a modern, scientifically designed slaughterhouse. The initiative forms part of AMC’s larger plan to establish hygienic and regulation-compliant slaughter facilities across major city markets, including Maharajganj Bazaar, Lake Chowmuhani Bazaar, and Battala Bazaar.

During his interaction with traders and members of the market committee, Mayor Majumder explained that the proposed slaughterhouse aims to end the long-standing practice of open meat cutting and selling along roadsides and within congested market areas—an issue that raises serious hygiene and public health concerns. “We have decided to develop covered, well-managed, and science-based slaughterhouses. Licensed meat sellers will collect fresh meat directly from these facilities before bringing it to their stalls,” he said.

The Mayor emphasized that the project would help eliminate public confusion and concern regarding open slaughtering practices, while also curbing unauthorized vendors who illegally cut and sell meat on city streets. A dedicated plot inside Durga Chowmuhani Bazaar has already been earmarked for the construction.

Seeking cooperation from traders, Majumder urged the market community to support the initiative, noting that improving hygiene standards ultimately benefits both sellers and consumers. He assured that AMC will strictly monitor operations to ensure that only fresh and hygienic meat reaches the public. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 54 lakh.

AMC Commissioner D.K. Chakma, local corporators, and senior officials accompanied the Mayor during the inspection, marking a significant step toward modernizing Agartala’s urban food safety infrastructure.
