Agartala, Tuesday: Tripura is reportedly witnessing a fresh surge in dog trafficking activities, with a disturbing incident coming to light from the Champlai area under Mungiakami police station. Four to five indigenous breed dogs were allegedly found stuffed inside sacks and abandoned in a forested stretch under the cover of darkness, triggering outrage among local residents.

The matter surfaced on Tuesday morning when alert villagers noticed suspicious sacks lying in the forest. Upon closer inspection, they were shocked to discover live dogs confined inside. The locals immediately informed the Mungiakami police, who rushed to the spot and initiated a rescue operation.

Shortly thereafter, members of Pawsome, a dog protection organization based in Agartala, arrived at the scene and took custody of the rescued animals. The dogs have since been shifted to a safe shelter, where they are receiving care and monitoring.

Residents have alleged that certain local individuals may be involved in the illegal trade and have called for a thorough investigation. However, police officials have not confirmed any names and stated that the matter is under active inquiry. Authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and exploring possible links to larger trafficking networks.

The episode has reignited concerns about the resurgence of dog trafficking in the state. Locals claim that such activities have persisted in pockets of the region for some time, underscoring the need for stricter vigilance and coordinated action by law enforcement agencies.

While swift intervention by villagers, police, and animal welfare volunteers ensured the safety of the animals in this case, citizens are demanding firm and sustained measures to dismantle any trafficking rackets and prevent further cruelty.
