AGARTALA: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma pledged his support for the cause of a constitutional solution for the indigenous people of Tripura on Saturday and assured that his party would take every necessary step to ensure the issue is discussed in the parliament. The announcement came during his address at a mega mass gathering organized by the Tripura’s largest tribal party.

Sangma, a prominent leader of the National People’s Party (NPP), arrived in Agartala to attend the event hosted by TIPRA Motha Party, founded by Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarman, the head of the state’s royal family.

During the gathering, Sangma also stressed the importance of forging a stronger regional alliance among the tribal parties active in the North East region to advocate for the demands of the people.

Extending his solidarity to the movement spearheaded by TIPRA Motha he said, “Many have asked me why I am interested in joining this massive assembly. To be honest, I am not only here to meet my friend Maharaja Pradyot Manikya and my brothers and sisters from the Tiprasa community, but also to lend my support to the demands, ideas, and perspectives put forward by the indigenous people of the state. I stand in solidarity with the cause of a constitutional solution.”

Highlighting the contributions of figures like BK Hranghkwal (now president of TIPRA Motha) from Tripura, Mizoram CM Zoramthanga, PA Sangma from Meghalaya, and others, emphasizing that their common goal was to ensure the voices of their people were heard.

In discussing the significance of numbers in politics, Sangma reiterated, “In a democracy, numbers matter. It’s time for all the tribal societies of the North East region to unite under one banner to make their voices heard. We should speak with a united voice.”

TIPRA founder Pradyot Kishore Manikya Debbarman pointed out that regional parties in Meghalaya, led by Conrad Sangma’s NPP, and TIPRA Motha in Tripura, had not formed alliances with national parties. He commended Sangma for his electoral victory in Meghalaya and the resilience shown by TIPRA in Tripura.

From the stage of the mass gathering, Pradyot Debbarman urged all tribal communities in the North East region to unite for a stronger alliance.
