Agartala, Nov 3: Two key accused in the Bagber mob lynching case in Tripura’s Khowai district surrendered before police after their anticipatory bail pleas were rejected by the Sessions Court and the High Court, an officer said on Tuesday.
Prasenjit Majumder and Sanjay Debnath, both residents of Ghilatali, surrendered at Kalyanpur police station on Monday night after remaining absconding since the incident in September, Officer-in-Charge Ashish Sarkar said.
The duo were produced before a local court on Tuesday, he added.
According to the police, the accused had allegedly left the state in an attempt to evade arrest. They subsequently approached the Sessions Court and the High Court seeking anticipatory bail, but their pleas were rejected, following which they surrendered.
The case relates to the death of Jalil Rahman (46), a cattle trader from the Ghilatali market area, who was allegedly beaten to death by a mob in Bagber on the night of September 1 on suspicion of cattle theft.
According to a complaint lodged by Rahman’s wife, Lilufa Begum, the victim had purchased two cattle from a local resident and was travelling to a weekly market when a group of people intercepted him and allegedly assaulted him.
Rahman was subsequently taken to Kalyanpur Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, police registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and launched an investigation to identify those involved in the alleged lynching.
Earlier, police had arrested two other accused, identified as Ajit Debnath and Dilu Das, in connection with the case.
With the surrender of Majumder and Debnath, the total number of accused arrested or taken into custody in the case has risen to four, police said.
Investigators are continuing their probe to establish the individual roles of the accused and ascertain the sequence of events that led to Rahman’s death.
The incident had triggered outrage in the region, with the victim’s family demanding action against all those involved.
Further investigation is underway, the officer said.
