Agartala, September 22: Greater public awareness and responsible behaviour among road users were highlighted as key measures for reducing road accidents at a road safety sensitisation programme held in West Tripura on Tuesday.
The programme was organised jointly by the West Tripura district administration and the Transport Department at the State Guest House, Sonar Tori. Transport Minister Sushanta Chowdhury inaugurated the District-Level Road Safety Awareness and Sensitisation Programme.
Speaking on the occasion, Chowdhury said road safety could not depend solely on enforcement of traffic regulations and called for a stronger sense of responsibility among motorists and pedestrians.
He advised drivers to observe traffic rules and speed limits and stressed the importance of wearing helmets and seatbelts. He also urged motorists not to drive after consuming alcohol and to exercise caution around pedestrians.
“Alongside our own safety, we must value the lives of others,” the minister said, emphasising that responsible behaviour by both drivers and pedestrians is essential for safer roads.
Officials from the police, district administration and Transport Department discussed various aspects of road safety, including accident prevention, safer traffic movement and measures to strengthen awareness among the public.
The session also highlighted the dangers of rash and reckless driving and the need for sustained behavioural changes. Officials called for greater community involvement to ensure that road safety becomes a shared responsibility.
The programme concluded with participants reiterating the message, “Safe Roads, Safe Lives”, and expressing their commitment to promoting responsible road use and safer transportation practices in Tripura.
