Agartala, September 21: Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) will have 100 additional MBBS seats from the 2026-27 academic session, taking its total annual intake to 250 from the existing 150.
The increase is set to provide more students from Tripura and the wider Northeast with an opportunity to pursue medical education within the state.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha welcomed the approval and expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for supporting the expansion of the medical college’s intake.
Taking to social media, Saha said the addition of 100 seats would open up new opportunities for students from Tripura and strengthen the state’s medical education and healthcare infrastructure.
The medical college had an approved annual intake of 150 MBBS students until now. Following the latest expansion, 250 students will be admitted to the MBBS programme every year, marking a substantial increase in the institution’s capacity.
AGMC will now have an intake comparable to several established medical institutions in the country, including Maulana Azad Medical College in New Delhi, B.J. Medical College in Gujarat, Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, SMS Medical College in Jaipur, Madras Medical College in Chennai and King George’s Medical University in Lucknow.
The development comes as medical education capacity continues to expand across the country. For Tripura, the additional MBBS seats are expected to strengthen access to professional medical education and add to the state’s existing healthcare infrastructure.
The increase also marks another expansion in the capacity of AGMC, which serves as one of the key institutions for medical education and healthcare services in the state.
