Agartala, September 10: The Tripura State Committee of the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) has urged the state police to act swiftly against those allegedly involved in attacks on students at several educational institutions in the state.

The student organisation submitted a memorandum to the Inspector General of Police (Law & Order), drawing attention to incidents it claimed had occurred over the past two weeks and seeking steps to strengthen student security.

According to the SFI, alleged incidents of assault were reported at Charilam English Medium School, Bharat Chandra Nagar School, MBB College, Ramthakur College and Ramkrishna College. The organisation said FIRs were registered and details of the alleged accused, including their addresses, were made available to the police.

However, the SFI claimed that arrests had not been made in the cases so far. It said the alleged delay had caused concern among students and created an atmosphere of insecurity in and around educational institutions.

The organisation also linked the incidents to what it described as a deterioration in the democratic environment on campuses. It alleged that students were being discouraged from expressing their opinions, organising peaceful programmes and participating in democratic activities.

The SFI called upon the IGP to issue necessary directions to the police officials concerned for expeditious investigation and appropriate legal action based on the evidence available in the cases.

The organisation also demanded that all students receive equal protection and said campus security should be ensured irrespective of students’ political or organisational affiliations.

SFI representatives maintained that educational institutions should provide a safe and conducive environment for learning, while allowing students to participate in legitimate academic and democratic activities.

They further urged the authorities to respond promptly to complaints involving students and prevent incidents of violence or intimidation from affecting the functioning of educational institutions.

The allegations were contained in the memorandum submitted by the SFI. The police response to the claims and the current status of the cases were not immediately available.

The student organisation said prompt action would help restore confidence among students and ensure a peaceful academic environment across Tripura.
