KAMALPUR, DHALAI: In a family where politics was closely associated with the Communist movement, Russell Sinha’s decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) marked a significant break from tradition.

Sinha, born on October 6, 1991, in Kamalpur, Dhalai, comes from a family with a long association with Tripura’s political life. Yet, instead of following the political path of his predecessors, he chose to build his career within the BJP, eventually taking up organisational, media and youth-related responsibilities.

His political background is rooted in several generations. His great-grandfather, late Gana Singha, was a member of Tripura’s first 30-member Territorial Council, constituted in 1957.

His uncle, late Bimal Singha, was a former Health and Family Welfare and Urban Development Minister of Tripura and was assassinated in 1998. His father, late Govinda Das Singha, popularly known as Biman Singha, was Bimal Singha’s elder brother and worked as a school teacher.

The family’s political connections continued through his aunt, Bijoy Laxmi Sinha, wife of Bimal Singha, who was a sitting MLA from the Communist Party when Russell entered active BJP politics.

On November 22, 2016, Russell formally joined the BJP as a karyakarta. He has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership and the Centre’s decision to implement demonetisation influenced his political choice.

The decision represented more than a change of party for Russell. It placed him on a political course different from the one followed by his family for decades.

Russell has also spoken about the personal difficulties that accompanied his political transition, including alleged death threats. The assassination of his uncles, he said, left a lasting impact on the family and influenced his views on political violence and political vendetta.

From Kamalpur to Agartala

Russell’s political career began to take shape under the guidance of then BJYM State President Tinku Roy, along with late Advocate Arun Kanti Bhowmik and Dr Ashok Sinha.

In 2017, he moved from Kamalpur to Agartala and began working as a full-time BJP worker. His responsibilities soon expanded to the party’s media activities, and he served as Co-Coordinator of the BJP Media Cell under then Media In-charge Victor Shome.

He later became involved in social media and content-related work for then State BJP President Biplab Kumar Deb. Russell remained associated with Deb until November 2018.

A Digital Approach to Politics

One of the early incidents that brought Russell wider attention involved a citizen seeking help from abroad.

In September 2017, he took up the case of Gopal Das, a resident of Belonia who was stranded in Saudi Arabia and seeking assistance to return to India.

Russell raised the issue through social media and approached then Union External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Twitter, seeking government intervention.

The episode reflected the role social media was beginning to play in his political work—connecting individual grievances with public representatives and government authorities.

For Russell Sinha, the transition from a family with Communist political roots to the BJP has therefore been both a political and personal journey. His career so far has been shaped by organisational work, digital outreach and a conscious decision to establish a political identity separate from his family’s traditional political legacy.
