Agartala, Tripura: Doctors at Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and GBP Hospital have achieved the state’s second successful childbirth through Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), marking another milestone in infertility treatment and reproductive healthcare in Tripura.

The achievement followed the successful treatment of a woman from Pratapgarh in Sadar sub-division who had been struggling with infertility for nearly eight years after marriage. She began treatment at AGMC and GBP Hospital in 2025 under the supervision of Professor (Dr) Jayanta Roy, Head of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Assistant Professor Dr Abhijit Shil was also involved in her treatment.

As part of the infertility treatment, an IUI procedure was performed on November 21, 2025. During the procedure, medically prepared sperm from the woman’s husband was introduced directly into her uterus to facilitate fertilisation. The treatment resulted in a successful pregnancy.

IUI is an assisted reproductive technique in which prepared sperm is placed inside the uterus around the time of ovulation. It is generally less invasive than some other assisted reproductive procedures and may be used as an initial fertility treatment or before considering more advanced options such as in-vitro fertilisation (IVF).

Following the successful pregnancy, the woman delivered a baby boy weighing 2.9 kg through Caesarean section on July 28, 2026. Both the mother and newborn remained under medical care and were discharged from the hospital on August 1.

The medical team involved in the successful procedure included Professor (Dr) Jayanta Roy, Dr Abhijit Shil, Associate Professor (Dr) Salil Bindu Chakraborty and Dr Suparna Sutradhar, among other healthcare professionals.

According to the state Health and Family Welfare Department, the IUI-based infertility treatment facility at AGMC and GBP Hospital was introduced around four years ago through the efforts of Professor (Dr) Jayanta Roy and Professor (Dr) J.L. Baidya.

The latest success is expected to further strengthen reproductive healthcare services in Tripura and provide couples struggling with infertility access to assisted reproductive treatment within the state.

The woman’s family expressed gratitude to the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Department and other healthcare workers for their care and support throughout the treatment and delivery.
