Agartala: High drama unfolded in the Tripura Legislative Assembly on Monday as Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman was expelled from the House for the day following a heated confrontation with Speaker Rampada Jamatia during the third day of the 13th Assembly’s 10th session.
The confrontation broke out during Zero Hour when Barman sought to raise the controversial issue surrounding an alleged suicide note linked to the death of Tripura DGP Anurag Dhankar. The Speaker had earlier disallowed a discussion on the matter, prompting the Congress MLA to persist with his demand.
As Barman continued to protest the decision, an argument reportedly developed between him and the Speaker. Jamatia objected to the language used by the opposition legislator and accused him of disrupting the proceedings and using objectionable and unparliamentary words.
Following the Speaker’s ruling, Barman was ordered to leave the House for the remainder of the day.
The action immediately triggered protests from opposition benches. Congress and CPI(M) MLAs, led by Barman, entered the well of the Assembly and raised slogans in support of their demand for a discussion on the alleged suicide note and circumstances surrounding the DGP’s death.
The protest further disrupted proceedings, as opposition legislators accused the government and the Speaker of attempting to prevent debate on an issue they described as being of significant public interest. Members of the ruling benches, meanwhile, maintained that the authority of the Speaker and the rules governing Assembly proceedings must be respected.
The tense scenes highlighted the growing political friction between the ruling side and the opposition during the ongoing session. The alleged suicide note controversy has emerged as a particularly sensitive issue, with the opposition seeking greater transparency and an opportunity to raise questions on the floor of the House.
The expulsion of Barman and the subsequent opposition protest have added another layer of confrontation to the Assembly proceedings. With the opposition continuing to press for a debate on the DGP-related controversy, the issue is likely to remain a major flashpoint in the remaining days of the session.
