Rajya Sabha MP Rajib Bhattacharjee on Sunday called for collective efforts to combat substance abuse and build a healthier society while attending the 74th foundation day celebrations of Shibnagar Modern Club and Amra Tarun Dal Club in the Banamalipur constituency.

The anniversary was marked by a blood donation camp, art competition and other social and cultural activities, highlighting the club’s long-standing involvement in community welfare.

Addressing the gathering, Bhattacharjee praised the club for its contribution to social service, sports and cultural activities over the past 74 years. He said clubs have an important responsibility in guiding young people towards constructive activities and strengthening social values.

“For 74 years, this club has been a pillar of social service, athletics and cultural life. Today, I feel proud to witness the honouring of our elders — a noble initiative that reflects the values of respect and gratitude,” Bhattacharjee said.

The Rajya Sabha MP placed particular emphasis on the club’s pledge, “Say No to Addiction, Build a Healthy Society,” describing it as more than just a slogan. He said the message should serve as a guiding principle for society, particularly in efforts to protect the younger generation from substance abuse.

Bhattacharjee stressed that creating a drug-free society requires sustained participation from clubs, social organizations, families and young people. Such initiatives, he said, can encourage youth to stay away from addiction and become involved in sports, cultural programmes and other positive activities.

The MP also appreciated the organization of the blood donation camp, describing voluntary blood donation as an important form of social service. A large number of donors participated in the initiative, demonstrating the community’s commitment to humanitarian causes.

Young participants also showcased their creativity through an art competition organized as part of the foundation day programme. The event brought together people from different age groups and combined social responsibility with cultural engagement.

The programme also honoured senior citizens and elders, acknowledging their contribution to society and reinforcing the values of respect and gratitude.

Bhattacharjee said clubs with a strong grassroots presence can play a significant role in spreading awareness against addiction while promoting healthy lifestyles among young people. The foundation day celebrations reflected the organization’s continuing emphasis on community service, health, culture and social responsibility.
