Agartala, July 27: A joint operation by the Government Railway Police (GRP) and local police led to the seizure of nearly 12 kilograms of cannabis and the arrest of a 19-year-old youth at Udaipur Railway Station on Sunday. Police suspect the contraband was being transported to Chennai as part of an interstate drug trafficking network.
The operation was carried out during routine security checks when the Kanchanjunga Express (Agartala–Sealdah) halted at Udaipur station. Police personnel noticed a young man behaving suspiciously on the railway platform and intercepted him for questioning.
According to police officials, the youth failed to provide a convincing explanation regarding the contents of the bag he was carrying. A thorough search of the bag led to the recovery of approximately 12 kg of cannabis, neatly packed for transportation.
The accused has been identified as Sagar Mia (19), a resident of the Moharbhog area in Sepahijala district. Preliminary investigation indicates that the cannabis was likely being smuggled out of Tripura to Chennai, though investigators are probing whether the consignment was intended for a larger interstate trafficking network.
Following the seizure, a team led by the Officer-in-Charge of Radha Kishore Pur Police Station reached the railway station and launched a detailed investigation. The seized contraband has been taken into custody, and officials estimate its market value to be worth several lakh rupees.
Police have registered a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and initiated further legal proceedings against the accused.
Investigators are now trying to identify the source of the cannabis, its intended recipients, and others involved in the alleged smuggling racket. The accused is being interrogated to gather information about the supply chain and possible links with organised drug trafficking networks operating across state borders.
Police officials said the investigation would continue until the entire smuggling network is unearthed. They reiterated that surveillance at railway stations and other transit points has been intensified to curb the illegal transportation of narcotics from Tripura to other parts of the country.
