Agartala, March 12: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party in Tripura has suspended a young party leader following allegations of moral turpitude and a rape complaint lodged against him by a married woman. The accused, identified as Arup Dhar, was serving as a district president of the party’s youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM).
The suspension order, issued by BJP state General Secretary Amit Rakshit, stated that the action was taken after complaints were received alleging Dhar’s involvement in activities that have tarnished the image of the party.
According to the order, the decision was taken following directions from the state BJP leadership. “Allegations have been received that you are indulged in immoral activities which are detrimental to the party’s image. Therefore, pending receipt of your written explanation, as directed by the Hon’ble State President of BJP Tripura Pradesh, you are hereby placed under suspension with immediate effect for gross misconduct,” the order stated.
The party has directed Dhar to submit a written explanation regarding the allegations. He has been asked to respond by March 18, 2026, and submit his explanation to the BJP Pradesh office in Agartala.
The suspension comes two days after a married woman filed a First Information Report (FIR) accusing Dhar of raping her on the pretext of marriage. In her complaint, the woman alleged that she had been in a relationship with Dhar and that he had promised to marry her.
According to the complaint, the situation escalated on March 2 when the woman’s husband allegedly caught Dhar with his wife. The husband was reportedly assaulted during the confrontation.
The woman further claimed that after the incident, Dhar cut off all communication with her, which prompted her to approach the police and lodge a formal complaint. Police have initiated an investigation into the allegations.
