Tripura’s Statistics Minister Bikash Debbarma on Thursday inaugurated a two-day national workshop on the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) at Pragna Bhavan, Agartala, highlighting the crucial role of reliable and timely statistics in framing sustainable development policies. The inaugural session was attended by several senior officials, including N.K. Santoshi, Director General of MoSPI, and Deepak Dhanawat, Director of the Economic Statistics Division, MoSPI. Chiranjib Ghosh, Joint Director of DES, delivered the welcome address and underlined the significance of the workshop in the backdrop of ongoing revisions to the base year of GDP and other key national indicators. He noted that the IIP continues to be a vital tool for assessing industrial growth and economic performance.

Addressing the gathering, Minister Debbarma welcomed delegates from across the country and spoke about Tripura’s development initiatives. He stressed that evidence-based and information-driven policymaking forms the backbone of sustainable and inclusive growth. “Workshops like this, which focus on technical aspects and base year revision of the IIP, will help make future planning more realistic, accurate, and effective,” he said.

The Minister also emphasised the importance of close coordination between the Centre and states, adding that sharing of experiences and best practices among officials would strengthen statistical capacity and improve governance outcomes.

The workshop has drawn participation from directors and senior officers of the Economics and Statistics Departments of several states, including Haryana, Uttarakhand, Meghalaya, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram, Jammu and Kashmir, Assam, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Manipur, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. Officials from MoSPI and representatives of the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) are also attending.

Scheduled for February 5 and 6, 2026, the sessions will focus on methodologies, data sources, and perspectives related to revising the base year of the IIP. The technical deliberations are expected to enhance skills, promote knowledge exchange, and improve the accuracy and consistency of industrial growth measurement across states.
