Agartala:
In a resounding endorsement of grassroots governance and institutional efficiency, Tripura has emerged as one of the top-performing states in the country under the Panchayat Advancement Index (PAI) 2.0. The rankings were announced by the Ministry of Panchayati Raj on February 2, 2026, highlighting exemplary performance in transparency, service delivery, and participatory democracy.
Tripura’s achievement is particularly noteworthy as all 1,176 Gram Panchayats in the state participated in the evaluation process for the 2023–24 financial year. The state ensured complete and verified data submission across every administrative tier, a feat that officials described as unprecedented at the national level. This 100 percent participation reflects Tripura’s robust institutional framework, effective coordination, and strong monitoring mechanisms at the village level.
The state also made headlines for individual excellence. Jugal Kishore Nagar Village Committee of Sepahijala district secured the highest score in the country with an impressive 88.44 points, surpassing nearly 2.5 lakh Gram Panchayats nationwide. Panchayat Minister Kishor Barman termed the achievement “a landmark moment that places Tripura at the pinnacle of Panchayat excellence.”
Tripura’s dominance continued with South Nalchar Gram Panchayat, also from Sepahijala district, securing the third position nationally with 88.14 points, while Chesrimai Gram Panchayat claimed the fourth position with 87.85 points. The remarkable performance of multiple Panchayats from the same district underscores the consistency and depth of governance reforms implemented at the grassroots.
Officials attributed the success to the state government’s sustained focus on data-driven decision-making, accountability, and citizen-centric service delivery. The recognition is expected to strengthen public confidence in Panchayati Raj institutions and motivate further innovation in local governance.
With this milestone, Tripura has not only earned national acclaim but has also set a powerful benchmark for participatory democracy and accountable governance at the grassroots level across India.
