Agartala, February 2:
Tripura Fisheries Minister Sudhangshu Das has welcomed the Union Budget 2026–27, presented by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as a progressive, people-centric and welfare-oriented financial roadmap that will accelerate the nation’s overall development.

Reacting to the budget, Das highlighted the government’s ambitious plan to develop 500 reservoirs and Amrit Sarovars across the country. He said the initiative would provide a major boost to the fisheries sector by enhancing water resources, strengthening nutrition security, expanding export potential and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for fishers, including those in Tripura.

“This Budget reflects the new flight of New India — rooted in development, trust and opportunity. It is clearly designed with the welfare of common people in mind,” the Minister said.

He pointed out that the reservoir and Amrit Sarovar initiative will be particularly beneficial for Tripura, where fisheries play a crucial role in rural employment, income generation and food security. The expansion and rejuvenation of water bodies, coupled with modern fishery practices, are expected to create new opportunities for local entrepreneurs and self-help groups, while improving productivity and quality.

Das further noted that the budget’s focus on sustainable resource management and infrastructure development would strengthen Tripura’s fisheries ecosystem and enable the state to make a greater contribution to national fish production and exports. He added that the initiative would also help improve nutritional outcomes by increasing the availability of affordable protein sources.

Congratulating Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, the Fisheries Minister said the budget reflects the Centre’s commitment to inclusive growth, rural empowerment and grassroots development. He emphasized that the measures announced align closely with the broader vision of “Viksit Bharat” by 2047.

Meanwhile, observers in Tripura believe that the renewed emphasis on reservoirs and Amrit Sarovars will give a fresh impetus to the state’s fisheries economy, ensuring improved livelihoods and long-term economic stability for thousands of families dependent on the sector.
