Tension prevailed in the Bamutia area under Airport Police Station jurisdiction on Wednesday evening following a violent incident at a local sweet shop in the Tebaria Sabuj Sangha locality. The incident has triggered widespread concern among residents, who expressed alarm over the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the area.
According to local sources, a notorious local miscreant identified as Gautam Roy allegedly vandalized the sweet shop and brutally assaulted an elderly artisan working there. The shop owner stated that the altercation began over a trivial financial dispute, when he asked Roy to repay an outstanding amount of ₹100. Instead of settling the dues, Roy reportedly became aggressive, used abusive language, and began damaging items inside the shop.
The situation quickly escalated when Roy allegedly attacked Gouranga Deb, a 50-plus artisan employed at the shop, assaulting him mercilessly. Eyewitnesses said that as the commotion drew the attention of nearby residents, several locals rushed in to intervene. Taking advantage of the chaos, the accused reportedly fled the scene before police could arrive.
The injured artisan was initially rushed to a nearby hospital for first aid. However, due to the severity of his injuries, he was later referred to GBP Hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment. His condition is reported to be stable, though he remains under medical observation.
Local residents revealed that Gautam Roy was recently released from jail and has a long criminal history. Multiple cases, including allegations of smuggling, theft and robbery, are reportedly registered against him across Airport and other police station jurisdictions. His repeated involvement in criminal activities has long been a source of fear and frustration for people in the locality.
The shop owner has announced his intention to lodge a formal complaint with the police regarding the assault and vandalism. Residents are now demanding swift and strict action against the repeat offender, urging law enforcement authorities to ensure safety and restore a sense of security in the area.
