Agartala:
Nearly half of the ambitious natural gas pipeline connecting Tripura and Mizoram has already been laid, officials of Indradhanush Gas Grid Limited confirmed on Thursday. The 119.5-km-long pipeline is a key component of the North East Natural Gas Pipeline Grid and is targeted for full completion by December 2027.

The pipeline originates from the Panisagar receiving terminal in North Tripura and passes through several strategically important locations in Mizoram, including Kanhmun, Zawlnuam, Kawrthah, Tuidam and Darlak. From near Mamit town, the alignment will further extend to Lengte before terminating at the proposed Sihhmui receiving terminal, situated around 21 kilometres from Aizawl.

Officials said the project is progressing steadily despite difficult terrain and logistical challenges in hilly areas. Once operational, the pipeline will enable the supply of natural gas from Tripura to Mizoram, significantly improving access to clean and reliable energy in the state.

Gas received at the Sihhmui terminal will be distributed to households in Aizawl city by Tripura Natural Gas Corporation Limited (TNGCL). This marks a major expansion of Tripura’s role as a regional energy supplier and reflects the growing inter-state energy integration in the Northeast.

The progress of the project was recently reviewed by Mizoram’s Civil Supplies Minister B Lalchhanzova during his visit to Agartala on Wednesday. During the visit, the minister held detailed discussions with officials of TNGCL and the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) on pipeline infrastructure, gas availability and future expansion plans. He also inspected a CNG station in Agartala and visited a residential complex where piped natural gas is already being supplied to nearly 330 households.

Officials said the Tripura–Mizoram pipeline, once completed, will cater to domestic, commercial, industrial and transport sectors in Mizoram. It is also expected to promote industrial growth, reduce dependence on conventional fuels and support the region’s transition to cleaner energy.

The project further strengthens Tripura’s position as a crucial energy hub in the Northeast and underscores the Centre’s push to improve energy connectivity across the region.
