An ABVP activist, identified as Aniket Deb, was allegedly assaulted by two individuals at Laljhari area in Dharmanagar on Tuesday. According to ABVP leaders, Deb had gone to a local school to address issues faced by students and was later scheduled to visit the Sanichera area, where a recent incident involving the death of a child has raised public concern. He was reportedly planning to submit a set of demands seeking a speedy and thorough investigation into the case.
While on his way, Deb was intercepted by two persons—identified as Jahangir Hussain and one of his associates. ABVP representatives claimed that the attackers confronted Deb after learning about his affiliation with the student organization. “When they came to know that Deb is affiliated to ABVP, they attacked him and beat him black and blue,” an ABVP leader alleged.
Eyewitnesses said the attack happened so suddenly that bystanders could not react in time. The assailants reportedly fled the scene before help could arrive. Local residents then rushed Deb to a nearby hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment for his injuries.
The ABVP has strongly condemned the assault, alleging that the incident had clear political undertones. The organization further claimed that one of the accused, Jahangir Hussain, is a Congress activist. They demanded immediate action from law enforcement agencies to identify and arrest the attackers.
Local ABVP leaders stated that such incidents are attempts to intimidate student activists who raise public issues. They urged authorities to ensure safety for individuals engaged in community outreach and to take strict action against those responsible for the assault.
Police have not yet issued an official statement, but the incident has sparked tensions in the area, with student organizations calling for swift justice.
