The two-day Unity Promo Fest kicked off with grandeur at the Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar College ground in Belonia, South Tripura, with Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu formally inaugurating the event.
In his inaugural address, Governor Nallu said that such festivals play a crucial role in promoting Tripura’s tourism destinations while highlighting the rich cultural heritage of its diverse ethnic and tribal communities. He noted that Tripura stands as a meeting ground for various groups, and the Unity Promo Fest creates a platform to celebrate their traditions while simultaneously strengthening the state’s tourism sector.
The Governor further mentioned that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s emphasis on boosting tourism in the Northeastern region has led to exhibitions across the country showcasing its vast potential. This, he added, has resulted in a steady increase in tourist footfall to the Northeast. He extended his best wishes for the festival’s success.
Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, speaking on the occasion, said the festival was conceptualised to foster cultural unity among communities and expand tourism opportunities. He highlighted that last year the Unity Promo Fest was organised in four districts and received an enthusiastic response. This year, the fest has been extended to six districts, including South Tripura and Gomati, to widen its reach. The initiative aims to present Tripura’s cultural wealth to national and global audiences while creating employment opportunities through tourism.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including South Tripura Zilla Parishad Sabhadhipati Dipak Dutta; MLAs Pramod Reang, Mailaflu Mog, and Swapna Majumder; District Magistrate Md Sajjad P; Superintendent of Police Maurya Krishna C; among others. The programme was chaired by Nikhil Chandra Gope, Chairperson of the Belonia Municipal Council.
The opening day witnessed vibrant cultural performances by artists from South Tripura, a stunning laser show, and an indigenous fashion show celebrating tribal craftsmanship.
The festival will continue on Sunday, featuring a special performance by acclaimed Indian playback singer and lyricist Palak Muchhal, adding a star attraction to the celebration.
With its blend of tradition and modern entertainment, the Unity Promo Fest stands as a lively testament to Tripura’s cultural richness and its growing potential as a tourism hub.
