Agartala, Nov 4: In a major boost to medical education in Tripura, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved an additional 50 MBBS seats for Tripura Medical College (TMC) and Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Memorial Hospital, Agartala.

Sharing the development on social media on Tuesday, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced that the total MBBS intake capacity at TMC has now increased from 100 to 150 seats, raising the overall MBBS seat count in Tripura to 450.

Dr. Saha highlighted that the state has witnessed a record addition of 225 MBBS seats in the last three years, reflecting the government’s strong commitment to expanding medical education and healthcare infrastructure. “This milestone marks another step towards ensuring better access to quality medical education and producing more skilled healthcare professionals for our state,” the Chief Minister said.

Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Saha thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda for their consistent support and guidance in strengthening Tripura’s medical sector. He said that the central government’s proactive assistance has played a pivotal role in improving healthcare facilities and promoting medical education in the North Eastern region.

The Chief Minister also emphasized that the increase in MBBS seats will not only benefit aspiring medical students but also help meet the growing demand for doctors across the state. “With this expansion, Tripura is steadily progressing towards self-reliance in healthcare and medical education,” he added.

The latest NMC approval is expected to further enhance Tripura’s medical infrastructure, ensuring that more students from the region get the opportunity to pursue medical studies within their home state.
