Kolkata, Oct 16 — The investigation into the Durgapur gang-rape case took a new turn on Thursday after police recovered a condom from the crime scene and 11 more from the hostel room of Wasif Ali, the arrested male friend of the victim, police sources said.
The discovery was made after the police expanded the cordoned-off area of the crime scene by another 50 metres. The site, located in a forested area near a private medical college and hospital in Durgapur, West Burdwan district, was re-examined by a forensic team accompanied by Wasif Ali.
Investigators said Ali, a fellow medical student, was arrested due to inconsistencies in his statements during questioning. Forensic experts collected several samples from both the crime scene and his hostel room for examination.
According to police, the 20-year-old second-year medical student from Odisha was gang-raped by five men on October 10 in the forested area after leaving the college campus with her male friend. Based on her complaint, all five accused were arrested earlier and remain in police custody.
Police later detained Wasif Ali for further questioning after finding discrepancies in his version of events. He, too, has been remanded to police custody for interrogation.
Meanwhile, the victim’s father has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the case to ensure swift and impartial justice. He said the family had lost faith in the state police and announced their intention to return to Odisha permanently once the legal procedures are complete.
The latest developments have deepened the mystery surrounding the incident, with investigators examining whether Wasif Ali played any role in the crime or attempted to mislead the investigation.
