Agartala, Oct 10: In a major development following the October 1 jailbreak from Dharmanagar Sub-Jail in Tripura, three of the six escaped inmates have been re-arrested, police officials confirmed on Friday.

The latest arrest was that of Rahim Ali, nabbed from Sribhumi district (formerly Karimganj) in southern Assam. A Tripura police team led by Sub-Inspector Biswajeet Das, with assistance from Assam Police, successfully tracked him down.

Earlier, two others—Abdul Pata and Narayan Chandra Dutta—were apprehended on October 1 and 2 respectively from the Dharmanagar area. Dutta, a Bangladeshi national, was previously arrested under the Passport Act, while Pata, a resident of Assam, was involved in drug trafficking and booked under the NDPS Act.

The dramatic escape occurred in the early hours of October 1 when six inmates, including one serving a life sentence, assaulted a jail guard using sharp weapons and fled the Dharmanagar Sub-Jail. The fugitives include undertrial prisoners Abdul Pata, Rahim Ali, Narayan Chandra Dutta, Rosan Ali, and Nazim Uddin, and life convict Sunil Debbarma, who is accused of multiple serious crimes including murder.

Following the breakout, a high-alert was issued across all police stations in North Tripura and Unakoti districts. Border Security Force (BSF) units were also instructed to maintain tight surveillance along the India-Bangladesh border to prevent any cross-border escape.

The Inspector General of Prisons has suspended Jailor Dhananjoy Bhattacharya and four warders over security lapses. Disciplinary actions are underway.

Authorities have sealed all exit points along Tripura’s borders with Assam, Mizoram, and Bangladesh as the search continues for the remaining three fugitives.
