Washington/London, Sept 18: US President Donald Trump on Thursday highlighted his close ties with India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, recalling his recent phone conversation with the Indian leader. Speaking at a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer before concluding his UK visit, Trump described Modi as a “friend” and said he shares a strong relationship with him.

“I’m very close to India. I’m very close to the Prime Minister of India. The other day, I wished him a happy birthday. We have a very good relationship. He put out a beautiful statement too,” Trump told reporters.

The remarks came days after Trump called Modi on Tuesday to wish him on his 75th birthday. In response, Modi thanked Trump in a post on X, describing him as a “friend” and reiterating India’s commitment to strengthening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership with the United States. Modi also extended support for Trump’s efforts toward a peaceful resolution of the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Trump, in turn, posted on Truth Social, calling their exchange a “wonderful phone call.” He praised Modi’s leadership and expressed gratitude for his backing on ending the war in Ukraine.

The phone call coincided with trade talks in New Delhi between US Assistant Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch and India’s chief trade negotiator Rajesh Agrawal. Both sides described the discussions as “positive,” signaling momentum in bilateral economic engagement.

During his press briefing, Trump also touched upon the Ukraine crisis, saying he was open to taking further action against Russia, but only with greater participation from European nations. “I’m willing to do other things, but not when the people that I’m fighting for are buying oil from Russia,” he added.
