PM Modi Engages in Key Bilateral Meetings on SCO Summit Sidelines in Tianjin

Tianjin, Aug 31 — Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a series of significant bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin, China, underlining India’s focus on strengthening regional ties and fostering cooperation with neighbouring countries.

Modi first met Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, reaffirming India’s commitment to supporting the island nation through developmental cooperation. Emphasizing the mutual benefits, the Prime Minister said India’s projects in the Maldives were aimed at enhancing the well-being of the people of both nations. “Interacted with President Muizzu of Maldives on the sidelines of the SCO Summit in Tianjin. India’s developmental cooperation with Maldives is greatly beneficial for our people,” Modi posted on X.

The Prime Minister also engaged with Nepalese counterpart KP Sharma Oli, describing relations between the two nations as “deep-rooted and very special.” In his message, Modi expressed delight at the meeting and highlighted the shared cultural, historical, and people-to-people ties that bind the neighbours together.

In another notable interaction, Modi met Myanmar’s State Security and Peace Commission Chairman, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. The two leaders reviewed India-Myanmar ties and discussed ways to deepen cooperation across various sectors, including security and connectivity.

A high-profile meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping was also a key highlight. Modi and Xi agreed on the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border, while reaffirming their commitment to mutual respect, interest, and sensitivity as guiding principles in bilateral relations. “Had a fruitful meeting with President Xi Jinping in Tianjin on the sidelines of the SCO Summit. We reviewed the positive momentum in India-China relations since our last meeting in Kazan,” Modi posted.

Additionally, Modi met Politburo Standing Committee member Cai Qi to discuss enhancing economic, political, and people-to-people exchanges between India and China.

Prime Minister Modi arrived in Tianjin on Saturday from Tokyo after completing his Japan visit. He was warmly received at Binhai International Airport with a colourful welcome ceremony ahead of the two-day SCO Summit.
