Agartala: August 23: In a bid to enhance fish production and achieve self-sufficiency, the Tripura government has initiated a statewide campaign to convert abandoned and neglected water bodies into fish farming zones. Fishery Minister Sudhangshu Das, along with Mayor cum MLA Dipak Majumdar, MLA Mina Rani Sarkar, local officials, and members of the Agartala Municipal Corporation, inspected one such site in Bhattapukur Ward No. 37 under the Agartala Municipal Corporation on Saturday.

The team focused on a significant water body situated at the junction of Ramnagar and Badharghat assembly constituencies. Speaking to the media, Minister Das emphasized the potential of these underutilized resources. “This water body, like many others across Tripura, has immense potential for aquaculture. Our aim is to make the state self-reliant in fish production by transforming these neglected sites,” he said.

Das informed that similar renovation efforts are underway across all eight districts of the state. The government’s broader goal is to meet the rising demand for fish within Tripura while reducing dependency on imports from other states.

“The visit was part of a plan to assess the feasibility of making this site suitable for aquaculture,” Das explained. “These efforts will not only increase local fish output but also generate employment and improve rural livelihoods.”

Highlighting the larger impact, the minister said this initiative represents a significant move toward sustainable development and food security. By turning abandoned water bodies into productive assets, the government seeks to promote economic growth in rural areas while addressing nutritional needs.

The mission, rooted in environmental and economic sustainability, reflects Tripura’s commitment to strengthening its fisheries sector and supporting local communities.
