New Delhi, Aug 20 — The Lok Sabha witnessed unprecedented chaos on Wednesday when Opposition MPs, including members of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), tore and hurled copies of three key bills towards Union Home Minister Amit Shah as he introduced them. The BJP has condemned the incident as “shameful” and a “disgrace to parliamentary democracy.”

BJP MP and actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut said the Opposition’s behaviour “crossed all limits of propriety.” She alleged that Opposition leaders attempted to snatch the Home Minister’s microphone and hurled bills — even claiming some carried stones. “But our party showed patience,” she remarked.

Echoing this, BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi called the act “truly unfortunate,” stating that TMC MPs and others “crossed every line of decorum” by tearing bills and attempting to attack the Home Minister.

BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj went further, terming the episode “nothing less than the murder of democracy.” She said the Opposition’s actions had “embarrassed voters and insulted democratic values.”

Union Minister Annpurna Devi also slammed the Opposition, alleging that even senior MPs behaved in an unruly manner. She rejected claims that ruling party MPs had attacked the Opposition, asserting, “We were only standing, not attacking.”

The uproar unfolded as Amit Shah tabled three key legislations — the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019.

The first bill proposes automatic removal of Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers, and Union Ministers if they face corruption or serious criminal charges for over 30 consecutive days. Opposition MPs strongly opposed this move, tearing copies of the bills and raising slogans. Amid the uproar, Shah recommended sending the bills to a Joint Parliamentary Committee for further scrutiny.
