Agartala, Aug 19 – The Tripura government is undertaking a series of initiatives to uplift the socio-economic status of women and make them self-reliant, said Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy on Monday.

Speaking at the inauguration of a sewing machine distribution programme held at Muktadhara Auditorium, Roy emphasized that economic empowerment must be accompanied by mental preparedness. “There must be determination to stand on one’s own feet. The state government is always by the side of women,” he said.

The programme was jointly organised by the Tripura State Commission for Women and Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL). As part of the initiative, 120 women from different parts of the state received sewing machines to support their journey towards financial independence.

Highlighting the government’s commitment to women’s empowerment, Roy noted that self-help groups (SHGs) are being promoted across the state to create livelihood opportunities. “Women are increasingly leading in different sectors across the state and the country. We hope Tripura’s women will also emerge as role models of self-reliance,” he added.

The Minister underlined that empowerment initiatives such as skill development and financial assistance not only help women earn a livelihood but also contribute to building confidence and leadership qualities.

State Women’s Commission Chairperson Jharna Debbarma, Vice-Chairperson Madhumita Choudhury, and TNGCL Managing Director Praloy Patra also attended the event. They lauded the government’s efforts and assured continued support to strengthen women-centric programmes.

The distribution drive is part of the broader mission to create sustainable income opportunities for women, enabling them to contribute meaningfully to their families and society. With such initiatives, the state aims to ensure that women gain both financial security and social recognition in the coming years.
