Kolkata, Aug 10 — The mother of the RG Kar rape and murder victim was discharged from a private hospital on Sunday, a day after she was injured during the “Nabanna Abhijan” march to the state secretariat. Doctors have advised her to remain at home for a few days under the supervision of a local doctor.

Her husband said her condition has improved, with reduced head swelling, though she still experiences neck pain and mental distress. He alleged that she was beaten by police during the march, causing the sacred conch shell bangle on her wrist — a symbol of married Hindu women — to break.

Union Minister of State for Education Sukanta Majumdar visited her at the hospital, claiming she had brought a rakhi to tie to policemen but was assaulted instead. Majumdar said she has vowed not to wear the bangle again until her daughter gets justice.

The first anniversary of the brutal rape and murder of a junior doctor at RG Kar Medical College was marked by tension in Kolkata and Howrah, with violent clashes between police and protesters. The victim’s father also alleged that the state government pressured the hospital to delay his wife’s admission. The hospital has not responded to the claim.

Meanwhile, BJP workers staged a brief road blockade in Salt Lake on Sunday, protesting the alleged police assault. Around 50 protesters sat at the Wipro office–Biswabangla Sarani crossing, demanding Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s resignation. The blockade was later cleared, and protesters were detained without incident, police said.

Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma stated that CCTV and video footage are being examined to verify allegations of police assault.
