The incident occurred on Lakshmibinarayan Bari Road in Agartala, where Suman Das, while on duty, was caught on camera kicking a young man who had fallen on the road. The disturbing footage was recorded on a mobile phone and quickly spread across social media platforms, drawing widespread criticism and condemnation from all quarters.

News channels and digital platforms aired the video extensively, prompting swift action from the authorities. Responding to the gravity of the incident, Commandant of the 3rd Battalion, Binoy Kishore Debbarma, suspended Suman Das with immediate effect, acting under the instructions of higher authorities. Additionally, a departmental inquiry has been ordered to probe the circumstances and determine accountability.

The suspension has been hailed by many as a strong and timely action by the state government to uphold justice and discipline within the force. Observers noted that the government’s prompt response sends a clear message that any abuse of power, especially by those entrusted with public safety, will not be tolerated.

The incident has reignited discussions on police accountability and the need for training in handling civilians with restraint and dignity. Human rights activists and civil society members have also called for a transparent investigation and appropriate legal consequences for the misconduct.

The state government’s decisive step is being viewed as a move to maintain public trust and reinforce the principle that law enforcement personnel are not above the law.
