Agartala, July 5: The Tipra Motha party has announced its decision to withdraw support from the BJP-led government in Tripura. The announcement was made on Saturday by party MLA and former insurgent leader Ranjit Debbarma during a press conference. He stated that the move was made following instructions from party supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarma.

Ranjit Debbarma also revealed that a meeting between Tipra Motha and Union Home Minister Amit Shah is likely to take place in Delhi on July 21 or 22, during which the party will officially communicate its withdrawal of support.

Adding to the political shake-up, Tipra Motha’s Lok Sabha MP Kriti Debbarma is expected to resign from Parliament. A member of the royal family, Kriti was elected from Tripura East in 2014 as a BJP candidate. Her resignation is being seen as a significant indicator of shifting political tides in the state.

In March 2024, Tipra Motha had joined the BJP-led government after a tripartite agreement was signed in Delhi among the state, the Centre, and the party. The agreement focused on the development of indigenous communities in Tripura.

However, tensions have resurfaced. On July 3, during a recent cabinet expansion, Tipra Motha ministers Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma were notably absent, along with other party MLAs. BJP MLA Kishore Barman was inducted as a new minister.

Following Tipra Motha’s announcement, opposition leaders reacted strongly. CPI(M)’s Jitendra Choudhury said the party should first formally withdraw support before any further action is taken. Congress leader Sudip Roy Barman commented that issuing threats via press conferences was not enough—formal communication with the Governor is necessary.

Political observers believe Tipra Motha’s move could reshape Tripura’s alliance dynamics. All eyes are now on the upcoming meeting in Delhi.
