Agartala, May 19: In the aftermath of the tragic deaths of two children in the Chanmari area of Agartala, CPM Politburo member and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Choudhury visited the site on Monday morning and urged the administration to extend full government support to the bereaved family.
The two minors—Prosenjit Debnath (11) and Priyanka Debnath (9), children of Krishna Debnath, tragically lost their lives after falling into a small pit near their home. The pit, reportedly dug for construction work, had filled with water. The children had been missing since Saturday, and their lifeless bodies were discovered in the water-filled pit on Sunday, sending shockwaves across the locality.
Speaking to media personnel during his visit, Choudhury emphasized the urgency of ensuring that the affected family does not miss out on government benefits and support due to their socio-economic condition. “This is a heart-wrenching incident. The administration must step in immediately and guarantee all possible assistance to the grieving family,” he said.
Upon reaching the family’s residence at Chanmari, Choudhury was informed that the parents had temporarily moved to their home in Jirania, likely to find solace and support from extended family members in the wake of the tragedy. Despite their absence, Choudhury conveyed his condolences and reiterated his demand for administrative intervention to provide financial aid, welfare support, and educational assistance for the surviving daughter of the family.
He also criticized the apparent negligence around construction sites in residential areas and called for accountability from concerned authorities to prevent such tragedies in the future.
