Agartala: May 16: The All India Democratic Students’ Organization (AIDSO), Tripura State Committee, staged a protest in front of Agartala Siksha Bhavan on Friday, raising serious concerns about the current state of the education system in Tripura.

Following the demonstration, a delegation from AIDSO met with the Director of Education to submit a formal memorandum outlining seven key demands aimed at improving education standards in the state.

Speaking to the media, AIDSO State President Ramakrishna Acharjee pointed out that many schools still lack textbooks, leaving students unprepared, especially as summer vacation approaches. “Students are being forced to sit idle at home due to the non-availability of textbooks. This delay is unacceptable and detrimental to their learning,” he said.

Acharjee also criticized the Vidyajyoti scheme, which transitions students to English-medium education from Class 9, stating that most institutions under this initiative lack qualified English-speaking teachers. The shortage of subject-specific educators has further deepened learning challenges.

He added that financial hardships are compelling families to withdraw their children from schools, and the Rs 1,000 fee for migration certificates has become an additional burden.

The seven-point charter of demands includes:

  1. Immediate supply of textbooks to all schools during summer vacation.
  2. Discontinuation of the Vidyajyoti scheme.
  3. Appointment of sufficient subject-specific teachers.
  4. Upgradation and proper maintenance of hostels.
  5. Simplification of the school admission process.
  6. Elimination of the Rs 1,000 migration certificate fee.
  7. Waiver of education fees at all levels.

The AIDSO called upon the state government and Education Department to act promptly and responsibly to resolve these issues for the betterment of Tripura’s students.
