Agartala: Nov 17: On Sunday, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Jitendra Chowdhury visited the South Ramnagar Gol Chakkar area in Agartala. He was accompanied by the CPI(M) MLAs and spoke to the affected families in the area.
A few days ago, the houses of the people living in the South Ramnagar Gol Chakkar area by occupying government land were bulldozed. The people of the area have become helpless as many were evicted from their homes without any arrangements for rehabilitation, leaving them to live under the open sky.
Opposition leader Jitendra Chowdhury told newsmen that after visiting the area and talking to the affected people, he realized that they had been living with all the legal papers for 40-50 years. He stated that it was wrong to suddenly evict them from government land with such a short notice period. He described the demolition of their houses with a 15-20 day notice as inhuman.
He also mentioned that according to the Supreme Court verdict, the law has been violated by evicting the locals in this manner using bulldozers. He suggested that the Supreme Court could take a case against the officials who led this work and showed the law in this way.
The people of the area handed over a memorandum to the Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Jitendra Chowdhury with two demands: to build houses on government land for their rehabilitation and to provide them with a guaranteed income.
Jitendra Chowdhury drew the attention of Ramnagar MLA and Mayor Deepak Majumdar and the government to resolve their problem. He also mentioned that he will meet the Chief Minister in this regard.
